Meet Leah A.K.A. Layla Feder AKA @ArtistInBerlin on Instagram: a versatile and talented contemporary artist, designer and innovator from Brooklyn, who’s work has been described as both striking and unconventional. Layla’s work, no matter what medium she chooses, can only be described as nothing short of sheer genius. Her art is all about the constant strive for originality, creativity, and expression. She is a transformational artist who does not fear exploration and innovation. She constantly is mixing up her style and experimenting with her craft. Whether it’s painting, graphic design or mixed media: she does it all. Layla’s exceptional approach to art, with her interesting choice of materials and flare, is a pleasure to observe. She is an artist who does not fear change or modernism. She understands how to pay great attention to detail when it comes to creating art, including its underlying meanings and purpose. Her work is grungy, gritty, conceptual and unconventional. With a background in architecture, fine arts and poetry, Layla has a deep understanding of visuals and design and is captivated by the expression of conceptual observations through art.
Layla was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised all over New York and New Jersey. Born into a family who belongs to a Hasidic sect known as Satmar, Layla was raised in accordance to their traditions, customs and rituals that date back to the eighteenth century. She spent her first half of her life in the community, isolated with its private schools, shops, and even dress codes—unaware that a modern world existed outside the confines of her neighborhood.
When Layla was ten years old, she moved to live with her mother in the “modern” society and was suddenly thrust in a strange environment unaccustomed to the people or new lifestyle where strict rules in what to eat, wear, or what language to speak were no longer. However, Layla’s curiosity about life, even the simplest day to day things others may think of as mundane were something of great joy, excitement and deep thoughtfulness. She is currently living and studying in New York City. Layla, an artist and writer, has built herself an expressive foundation through innovative observation. Her work is a reflection of her cultural experience and self psychoanalysis: she has created a vitality of self awareness.
