Meet Dr. Elliot Mahlof, AKA TheMDChef: Medical doctor by day, chef by night! Elliot has an incredible food & recipe blog, which reflects not only Elliot’s medical precision and knowledge of health, but also his creative side with his exceptional choice of ingredients and tasty food. He has a particularly sensitive eye for texture, color, taste and flavor. Not to mention he is an outstanding writer: being a doctor and all, you know he’s going to be smart and grammatically correct but he also has a surprisingly great wit and humor to his writing, which makes his blog a pleasure to read and follow. Elliot started out years ago posting amazing food pictures of his cooking to his social media until one day when he decided to start his first ever food blog with all of his recipes included, broken down and skillfully photographed. He now periodically blogs about the food he’s cooking and shares intimate details of his background as well as his fancy dinner parties.
TheMDChef is an Internal Medicine resident at Emory University with an interest in Preventative Medicine and Cardiology with a deep passion for cooking gourmet and healthy meals. Elliot cooks not only what’s trending in hip restaurants but also publishes recipes of his Middle Eastern ancestors that can be dated from thousands of years ago. His blog takes the reader on foodie adventures where they’ll explore (mostly) heart-healthy and Mediterranean style foods. Elliot was born in NYC and raised at the Jersey Shore. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He then went straight on to study medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, where he continues to train as a resident. Elliot works predominantly at Emory Hospital, Grady Memorial, and the VA, which enables him to work with patients across the entire socioeconomic and health literacy spectrum.
In Elliot’s double life, he is a passionate home cook. He especially enjoys making food for friends and family. He loves to throw elaborate dinner parties in the spirit of Ina Garten. It’s definitely his creative and social outlet away from his otherwise demanding (though very fulfilling) career in medicine. Not surprisingly, as his days in the hospital become increasingly busy, his desire to spend hours after work creating spectacular meals has grown exponentially. (His friends don’t seem to be complaining).
While TheMDChef loves to indulge in great food as often as possible, he is an advocate for moderation. Elliot has learned the hard way (multiple times over) that balance is essential for a healthy and happy life. This is very much the way he approaches eating and cooking. While he generally follows dietary patterns of the heart-healthy, Mediterranean diet, he has no qualms about eating a giant steak here and there as he pleases: the foods and recipes he shares on his blog reflect those ideals. Dr. Elliot Mahlof is as much a skilled professional as a truly unforgettable and capable human being. He is a real artist of not only cooking and photography, but of health and lifestyle. As time goes on Elliot will continue to blog about his delicious food and I for one am looking forward to seeing what he cooks up next!
