The 29th Annual InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball, one of Miami’s most anticipated charity events of 2024, raised over $5 million to grant life-changing wishes for critically ill children. Held on November 2 at the iconic InterContinental® Miami, this year’s gala combined elegance, generosity, and unforgettable entertainment in a record-breaking night.
“While we are still tallying, we had a record-breaking night, raising well in excess of $5 million,” said Norm Wedderburn, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. His statement reflected the unwavering support from donors and the community to transform lives through the power of wishes.
Each year, the Make-A-Wish® Ball features spectacular entertainment, with past headliners including Diana Ross, Lenny Kravitz, Steven Tyler, and Sting. This year, Grammy-winning artist Gwen Stefani lit up the stage with a show-stopping 45-minute set that included hits like “Hey Baby” and “It’s My Life.” Stefani also debuted her new song, “Swallow My Tears,” and introduced her bass guitarist, a former Wish Kid, whose journey embodied the evening’s mission of hope and transformation.
Chaired by philanthropist Shareef M. Malnik and actor Gabrielle Anwar, the black-tie gala welcomed Miami’s most influential figures, including designer Naeem Khan, artist Romero Britto, and stars from The Real Housewives of Miami such as Lisa Hochstein, Julia Lemigova, Larsa Pippen, Guerdy Abraira, and Kiki Barth.
This year’s theme, “CIRCO: La Madre Della Luce” (The Mother of Light), transformed the venue into a whimsical Italian circus. Guests were greeted by a hot pink entrance, celestial backdrops, and lavish décor featuring roses, peacock feathers, and sequined tablecloths, creating an atmosphere of enchantment and luxury.
A touching highlight of the evening was the recognition of “Wish Kid” Kennedy Cunningham. After battling leukemia, Kennedy fulfilled her dream of cooking with chef Joanna Gaines. Her family shared their heartfelt gratitude, while Kennedy’s radiant smile reminded everyone of the powerful impact of granting wishes.
The gala’s live auction raised significant funds, offering coveted items such as a 2024 McLaren Artura, a Naeem Khan couture gown, and artwork by David Banegas. Donations to the “Million Dollar Circle” included $1 million contributions from the Finker-Frenkel Family Foundation, Dennis Crowley, Peter and Tatiana Cancro, and Barry and Missy Skolnick.
Guests also enjoyed a gourmet dinner prepared by the InterContinental® Miami culinary team. Highlights included “L’Equilibrista,” a basil-kissed tartlet of jumbo lump crabmeat, and “Goccia di Luce,” a vanilla-bean panna cotta topped with mango-lime coulis.
Following the gala, the InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Nightclub carried the celebration into the early hours. Legendary performer Martha Wash headlined with hits like “It’s Raining Men,” joined by Rocky Lanes, Robbie Elias, and Yoli Mayor. The cabaret-style afterparty also featured music by DJ Affect, keeping the energy alive well into the night. Attendees were treated to themed gift bags, including Italian espresso and cookies, as a token of appreciation.
“Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the unwavering support of our InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball partners, we are able to bring hope, strength, and joy to so many children and families who need it most,” Wedderburn said.
As dreams took flight and wishes came true, the 29th Annual InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball solidified its place as the crown jewel of Miami’s charity season, combining community, compassion, and celebration into a truly unforgettable event.
