March 24, 2015 – In continuation of the 10th Anniversary celebrations that began in Miami last December, Design Miami/ brings fresh energy and new programming to the Global Forum for Design in Basel this June. An exclusive selection of galleries displaying museum-quality exhibitions from across the globe are supported by new and innovative cultural programming that includes the return of the Design at Large program, this year curated by André Balazs, the inaugural edition of Design Curio in Basel, the Swarovski Designers of the Future award and a Collectors Lounge designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Olson Kundig Architects.

Over the past ten years Design Miami/ has consistently delivered the best of collectible design through an unsurpassed gallery program. This year is no different, with offerings that include Galerie Patrick Seguin’s Prouvé house brought into the twenty-first century by Richard Rogers, Demisch Danant’s recreation of the iconic lobby of Boreal 9 in Paris designed by Michel Boyer in 1972, a commissioned interactive installation from famed German toy designer Renate Müller at R & Company, the first major exhibition of Carl Auböck works at Patrick Parrish, the European debut of new Byung Hoon Choi works at Friedman Benda and an exhibition exploring heavy metals from Beijing-based newcomer Gallery ALL.

The premier edition of Design Miami/ Basel in 2006 played host to 17 of the world’s leading galleries. Although the gallery program has developed in leaps and bounds since, the fair welcomes back 11 of those 17 founding galleries to their 10th Anniversary: ammann//gallery, Cristina Grajales Gallery, Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery, Demisch Danant, Galerie kreo, Galerie Patrick Seguin, Hostler Burrows, Jousse Entreprise, LAFFANOUR – Galerie Downtown, Magen H Gallery, Nilufar Gallery and R & Company.

“Design Miami/ has grown hand-in-hand with a growing global awareness of the importance of design. These past ten years have seen the market for collectable design take great strides; diversifying and maturing, and now we are really pleased to see that this area of collecting has become a central activity for both international contemporary art collectors and those focusing solely on design. The fair is an essential stop for the tribe of international collectors, a fact that is confirmed by the 36,000 visitors we welcomed in December 2014. The fact that we started out with 17 galleries in 2006 and now have over 50 carefully selected galleries that represent the best the design world has to offer is testament to the progress the market has made in a decade and the prominent positioning Design Miami/ continues to enjoy. Ten years on, we are still the only fair that brings together exquisite historical material and new commissions by today’s most promising young talent under one roof” says Rodman Primack, Executive Director of Design Miami/.

Launched in 2014, Design at Large presents large-scale works of historical and contemporary design that transcend the traditional gallery booth. The 2015 edition centers on the theme of twentieth and twenty-first century architectural expression.

Following on from last year’s program, which was curated by Barneys New York Creative Director Dennis Freedman, Design Miami/ has appointed real-estate magnate, restaurateur, hotel entrepreneur and collector André Balazs as curator for this year’s edition.

Balazs is known for his unique approach to the hospitality sector, revolutionizing the industry with carefully designed environments at the Chateau Marmont, The Standard hotel group, The Mercer Hotel and now London’s Chiltern Firehouse. An early collector of architecture and a great proponent of design, Balazs has worked with incredible talent over the years to create these environments. He remains a trailblazer as a collector, creator and collaborator, and is the perfect helmsman for this year’s Design at Large.

Presented at the entrance to Design Miami/ Basel, this year’s Design at Large is the result of an open call for applications to gallerists, architects, designers, schools, curators and institutions. Winners of the program are selected by André Balazs. Their works will debut in the 2000 square meter Event Hall at the entrance of Design Miami/ Basel.

Following its success in Miami last December, Design Miami’s new exhibition platform showcasing immersive cabinets of curiosity launches this June in Basel. Design Curio invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present total environments of objects, textures, artifacts and ideas that challenge and contextualize familiar design narratives.

Spanning the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and emphasizing surprising installations of scientific and technological research alongside handcraft and creative production, the Curios are interspersed amongst Design Miami/ Basel’s gallery program, infusing the fair’s exhibition program with inventive snapshots of today’s design landscape.
