Cuba, known for its’ vibrant colors and diverse culture is probably the last place one would expect a high-end brand like Chanel to host the unveiling of its 2017 Cruise Collection, but creative director Karl Lagerfeld proved to be just as unpredictable as Anna Wintour, the ice queen herself.
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016 at around 6:15 PM the presentation of Chanel’s Resort 2017 Cruise Line Collection ensued as the city of Havana welcomed the fashion-forward foreigners the only way they know how- with music. Traditional tunes blared from open windows of local residents, dancing spontaneously erupted on the sidewalks and the essence of a joyous, spirited country enveloped the city. Open to the public, the fashion show took place at the Havan’s Paseo de Prado, the dividing line between Old and New Havana.
Many of Lagerfeld’s favorite models walked in the show, including Stella Tennant, Mariacarla Boscono, Mica Arganaraz, Lindsey Wixson, and Soo Joo Park. Amongst the audience were a few celebs in attendance; Tilda Swinton, Gisele Bündchen, and Vin Diesel to name a few. The Kardashians were also in Cuba but did not attend the show.
Staples that defined the 50’s like bright, fluorescent colors, fringe, 1950’s-style suits and wide ties were present in the boldest sense. One model even strutted down the runway puffing on a cigar, sending aromatic fumes laced with tobacco and a high-sense of style into the atmosphere. For transportation, guests were chauffeured to the show in a series of old convertibles in bright colors.
In lieu of a traditional finale, the Chanel show ended with a lively conga line of dancing models and musicians.
