Meet Lori Field: a post-apocalyptic Romanticist artist with the aesthetic-compulsive disorder who renders obsessive narratives with colored pencil, silverpoint and encaustic. Lori is a visual artist living and working in the New York City area. Her  encaustic  work is a combination of drawing, painting, and incorporates little bits of collage in the background. The main components, the figures are hand drawn in colored pencil and then cut out and embedded within pigmented encaustic paintings (beeswax and resin). Not to be mistaken, though, she is not a collagist or an illustrator, and those descriptions of her work tend to drive her bananas. In addition, she also creates awesome wearable sculpture and drawings. Lori is excited to take a fresh approach for her new body of work for her solo in Berlin next June, which will consist of solely her paintings.

Lori’s mixed media drawings, paintings, and sculptures straddle a border between reality and dream, past life and present. They evoke subliminal, mysterious worlds – planets of my own creation, demimondes peopled with anthropomorphic ‘angels with attitude’, accompanied by mutants, exhibitionists, seducers, chimeras… and other intimate strangers.

Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 4.15.01 PMSubmitting to an obsession with obsessiveness, and exploring and visualizing the concept of ‘the other’, the work is deliberately intimate, containing fetishistic figures that are emotionally confrontational and exaggerated in their ‘otherness’. Symbolism remains far more felt than understood, more disquieting than soothing. In these primitive visual myths of their secret lives, animalistic figures provide a means for emotive personification, characterizing or exhibiting human motives and foibles, with external traits suggesting internal ones.

These shape-shifting archetypes – a cast of reoccurring characters – create intuitive narratives that explore themes of loss, rebirth, identity, denial, alienation, loneliness……and vulnerability.  Set in their evolving mythological context my ‘creatures’ seduce, and their peculiar environments are redolent of a flawed, human fragility.

Drawing and embroidering tattoos on the bodies, as a metaphor for memory, suggests an assimilation of culturally inscribed messages. By playing with my own fairy tales and folklore – by personalizing obsessive symbols and visual language – the work helps me process my own reactions to the real world and the actual events shaping it.

Lori’s revolutionary work is a modern and fresh take on an age-old practice, making her a true contemporary artist, in every sense of the word. She has a full mind of ideas and self-expressions and is constantly striving for the pursuit of perfection. She is as much a skilled artistic professional as a truly unforgettable and capable human being. She is a true artist of not only painting but of interior design, innovation and lifestyle. As time goes on, Lori will continue to delve deeper into the multifaceted world of art by utilizing a wide range of mediums and taking an intimate approach to art direction and design.
